National
Vanilla Milkshake Day
In
1922 a Chicago Walgreen’s associate named Ivar “Pop” Coulson was credited with mainstreaming
this sweet treat. In the 1950s malt and shake shops became popular throughout the
country and today the milkshake continues to be a classic American Dessert.
From
coast to coast, here are just a few of my favorite places to get a good shake:
·
Shake Shack – Opened in 2004 in Madison
Square Park, NY as a hot dog stand quickly evolve into a chain that serves
great shakes, burgers and hot dogs.
·
Burger Bar – Located in
Las Vegas, Nevada, Burger Bar has incredible shakes that range from vanilla to
Twinkie.
· Millions of Milkshakes – If you are ever in West
Hollywood, CA Millions of Milkshakes is the place to go! Often visited by
famous celebrities, you can order a classic vanilla shake or a Kim Kardashian, which includes strawberry, banana and whip cream.
So where will you go to celebrate National Vanilla Milkshake Day?
Ingredients
·
3/4 cup chilled whole milk
·
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise
·
2 1/4 cups vanilla ice cream
·
2 tablespoons malted milk powder
·
1/4 cup malted milk balls (such as Whoppers or Maltesers; about 1
ounce), crushed in mortar with pestle or in processor
Ingredient Tip
·
Look for malted milk powder in the supermarket aisle where dry milk
powder is found or in the aisle with coffee, tea, and cocoa.
Preparation
·
Place two 12-ounce (or larger) glasses in freezer to chill 1 hour.
·
Pour milk into blender. Scrape in seeds from vanilla bean; discard
bean. Cover and blend 15 seconds. Add ice cream and malted milk powder and
blend until thick and creamy, stopping to push down ice cream as necessary.
Divide milk shake between chilled glasses. Top each with crushed malted milk
balls and serve.
